Saturday Flowers

Our friends Matt & Allison just bought their first home so we went over today for their house warming party. I'm always a little confused about what type of gift you bring to these parties, but saw this cute little plant and had to get it.
My blogging is going to be off and on. We're switching internet providers right now, and unfortunately we didn't have an overlap.

Who is your provider? Who do you recommend?

Oh, The Things You'll See

I was stuck in traffic on my way home today, and saw this house. I pass it every day on my way home from work, but never really noticed it. Isn't it cool?

Attack of the Giant Silverware!

I have never in my life seen silverware this large.
My dad and I went out for lunch today at J K O'Donnell's Irish Pub and felt like little wimps trying to pick up our napkins.

I Can't Believe I'd Waste My Time

But this was too funny to pass up.
She looks gorgeous? Really?

Tell Us How You Really Feel

Jen Schill is mad. I don't exactly know what she's mad about, but hopefully her dad knows.

Jen started a blog called DoNotVoteForMyDad.com.

Girl paid a lot of money to run an ad telling Oklahoma voters to not vote for her father.

The only thing I have to say is "Dorothy Mantooth is a saint."

Do You Have An Opinion?

Sure you do.

Do you like Starbucks?

Sure you do. (Ok, maybe you don't.)

I was at SBux the other day and saw a poster for this website on their magnet board (do you read those? I do).

If you have an opinion, or want to read what other people think about SBux, check out this website. Join the conversation. MyStarbucksIdea.com.

Plain Jane

One thing I've missed since cable is shows like this.

I'm really liking this show. Are you?

Relaxing Lunch

I went and ate lunch in the park today by myself. I usually eat lunch with a friend, so it was a welcome change to have some time to myself. I love the park in the summertime.

Baby Boy

Nick and Hannah are having a baby boy, sometime very soon. At the risk of sounding like we're all from the same branch of the family tree, Hannah is Nick's wife, but I consider them both my cousins. We're all the same age, so its easy to be friends as well as relatives. We don't see them all that often, but we always have a great time when we're together. I don't know if you remember the story or not about the night we found out that Hannah was pregnant. It's a good one.

This is the cake I made for the shower. The dots are just the little melting chocolate things in light blue and white. I made a cake similar to this for Megan's Graduation.
I thought that fresh fruit sounded fantastic, so I went overboard.
It doesn't get any prettier, or easier than that.
The punch. I've never been to a shower without punch, so I had to learn how to make it. This is a 2 liter of 7-Up, the rest of the bowl full of Hawaiian Punch, and orange sherbet on top.
Crackers and cheese.
The water with strawberries in the pitcher sitting next to the red cups was surprisingly the biggest hit of the shower. Everyone loved it. It is water with strawberries in it. That. Is. All. Nothing fancy.
Yum. My favorite, meatballs. I bought frozen meatballs and made my own sauce. It's a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's with half a jar of grape jelly mixed in.
The tiny ham sandwiches. These are Hawaiian Rolls, ham, and cheese. The topping is butter, mustard, Worcestershire, poppy seed and minced onion. These are amazing.
It was a huge coincidence that the cake, plates, napkins, and invitations matched everything that Hannah registered for. She told me how cool she thought it was that I did that, so I fessed up that it was all chance.
Our super clean living room. Main location of the shower.
Mom-to-be chair.
Game prizes. We only had two games and they were super simple. I hate shower games. I don't enjoy them at wedding or baby showers. I don't get the point of them at all. We did one game where you measured how big you thought Hannah was with a roll of toilet paper. The person closest won a manicure set from Bath and Body Works. For the other game I set a kitchen timer and who ever was the giver of the gift Hannah was opening when it went off won. They got a candle and Hannah got baby socks.
Kitchen chairs re-purposed for the day.

The food.

The beautiful Mommy-to-be. Isn't she adorable?

The shower went better than I could have ever planned. I'll call this one a hosting success.

What Is Your Dream Job?

 Everyone has one.

Joshua's mom's dream job is to be a florist. She is amazing at it. I bought these flowers for Hannah's baby shower and asked if she would help me with them (meaning: do them) and I've been admiring them ever since.

She really does an awesome job.

Ever Just Feel Like Being Quiet?

I do. A lot. Almost as much as I feel like talking, if that makes any sense.

This past week has been a quiet one for me. (I'm not sure if Josh will say the same though). I haven't really talked to anyone, and I haven't posted on this blog at all. I guess the only real reason I have is stress, and that isn't even all that bad.

I know, without a doubt, that everything in life will work out. The past six months of my life have been a testament to that. But I still feel...subdued. I think all this heat has cooked my brain.

You can hate me, but I'm ready for cool weather. I'm ready for hooded sweatshirts, chili, and football games. I don't even like football, but there is something about being able to hear the NHS football games at our house on a Friday night. I think I'm ready for that. I'm hoping to enjoy this fall, as I did not enjoy much of the last one (thanks, pneumonia).

I will make one thing clear. I am not ready for snow.

Oh To Have A Brother

A best friend. A play buddy.
I babysat today.
They had a stick fight and helped cut down a tree...unsuccessfully.
Then my majesties told me they wanted water.

Babysitting is great. :/

Summer Living

I am obsessed with summer!

We bought a fire pit a few weekends ago, and some chairs. I am not kidding, sitting outside, watching the fire, and doing nothing is just about the most fun I've ever had. Call me boring. Do it. I dare you.

I went shopping the other day and found that our chairs had been marked down to $7. So I loaded up the Jeep...

And now, we have 10 chairs. Come on over. We've got room.
I loooooovvveee my chairs.

Happy Friday

I found a new drink. It makes me smile.
Free donuts make me smile too. Having a cousin who works at SBux is pretty much awesome.
Free donuts make Josh smile too.

What makes  you smile?

I also had a coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond, so I got $2 off of my coffee.

It was a good shopping day!

Easy Read

A long time ago, my cousin Carsyn told me to read this book. I have never watched an episode of the Chelsea Handler Show nor do I know anything about her, besides the fact that she's a comedian.

I really didn't have any expectations going into this book, but everyone had told me that its hilarious.

Here is the synopsis from bn.com.

"When Chelsea Handler needs to get a few things off her chest, she appeals to a higher power -- vodka. You would too if you found out that your boyfriend was having an affair with a Peekapoo or if you had to pretend to be honeymooning with your father in order to upgrade to first class. Welcome to Chelsea's world -- a place where absurdity reigns supreme and a quick wit is the best line of defense.

In this hilarious, deliciously skewed collection, Chelsea mines her past for stories about her family, relationships, and career that are at once singular and ridiculous. Whether she's convincing her third-grade class that she has been tapped to play Goldie Hawn's daughter in the sequel to Private Benjamin, deciding to be more egalitarian by dating a redhead, or looking out for a foulmouthed, rum-swilling little person who looks just like her...only smaller, Chelsea has a knack for getting herself into the most outrageous situations. Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea showcases the candor and irresistible turns of phrase that have made her one of the freshest voices in comedy today."

I'm sure you get this, but this book and Fearless are worlds apart from each other. This book, Are You There Vodka... was good. Parts of it I didn't entirely enjoy reading, but there were a few days I had to put it down because I was laughing at work and getting funny looks.

This is another that I wouldn't buy, but check out from a library if you're looking for carefree, no thinking, reading.

I'm still working on quite a few other books.

I started this one today at lunch. It is a pretty thin book, so I may try to stick it out. I didn't feel so hot today and that may be the reason I wasn't so into reading it. I'll give it a couple more days to see if it grows on me.

Megan bought this book and just loaned it to me to read. She said it was good. I'll fill you in with my opinion when I finish it.

This one is waiting for me on the hold shelf at the library. I read her last book, Barefoot and liked it. It was different than what I usually read, but decided I wanted to give this book a chance.
Megan still has this book, but it is on my list to read once she's finished with it...no rush, I've got a long list.

What are you reading this summer??

Summer Reading

I finished reading Fearless by Max Lucado a few weeks ago. Here is a brief synopsis of the book from bn.com

"They're talking layoffs at work, slowdowns in the economy, flare-ups in the Middle East, turnovers at headquarters, downturns in the housing market, upswings in global warming. The plague of our day, terrorism, begins with the word terror. Fear, it seems, has taken up a hundred-year lease on the building next door and set up shop. Oversized and rude, fear herds us into a prison of unlocked doors. Wouldn't it be great to walk out?
Imagine your life, wholly untouched by angst. What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to threats? If you could hover a fear magnet over your heart and extract every last shaving of dread, insecurity, or doubt, what would remain? Envision a day, just one day, where you could trust more and fear less.
Can you imagine your life without fear?"

I enjoyed this book. I made Megan read it...I'm not sure if she's finished it or not...perhaps she will post a review of it on her blog when she's finished with it.

While I thought it was a good book, I think a lot of it was unnecessary. I thought there were good points, but felt like it too a long time to get there. I think he could have summed it up better without being so wordy. His illustrations though with side stories really help shed light on common problems.

I would suggest checking it out from your local library, but it isn't one I'm going to buy.

This is Indiana

So I think that acting like a hillbilly occasionally should be excused. I don't use up my hillbilly passes like a lot of Hoosiers do, so every once in a while I decide to cash one in.

I don't own a paper shredder. It would be convenient for me to have one, but I don't. I don't want to spend the money, and frankly I don't think home shredders do all that great of a job. We have one at work that does about a billion pages at once, and I don't think I could ever be satisfied with shredding three sheets at a time.

We have been talking about getting a fire pit for a long time. Like over a year. I wanted to do the whole bricks in the ground type thing, but we have dogs in our back yard, and I couldn't figure out where to put it that we would want to sit at all the time...so the solution is:

The day after we found this one, I decided to go through my black box (important papers) and shred the older stuff that I don't need any more to make room for the newer stuff. My stack ended up being way bigger than I anticipated, and since we now have a fire pit, I decided to burn it.

I used my new fire pit to shred my bills.
And it was fun.

Wife of the Year

So we used to have a Wii. But then we sold it.
And we got this. A regular Nintendo. As old as us. I went and bought this for Joshua one night, and therefore I am wife of the year.

Yes, we're moving backward.

Lake Morning.

I know when most people sit by the lake, their view is of the lake. I accidentally locked myself out this weekend when I got up to let Amico go to the bathroom, so I was sitting outside for a while by myself. This was my view. Even though I wasn't looking at the water, it was enjoyable, and comfortable.

Just A Walk In The Park

The other day on our way up to the lake I took the dog for a walk. Josh wanted to stop at the gym and workout before we headed up. The gym is just off the highway, so it was pretty convenient. We had Amico though, and couldn't leave him in the car since it was so hot, so I decided to walk with him while Josh was working out. We found a super secret (not really) walking trail, that was pretty cool. We had it all to ourselves.

The Dupont Hospital Sport and Fitness Park.
Any bit of shade helps.
They had these cool stretching areas all along the trail.
Yes, this is beautiful, scenic Indiana.
We have some awesome ponds.
And some cool grass.
But our best feature is this concrete wall that lines the interstate. It's just high enough so that you cannot see anything. I can't stand this wall. I wish they had never put it up.
It is so exciting.
