The word antebellum is from the Latin word ante meaning "before" and bellum meaning "war".

So if you hear someone talk about the Antebellum Age or just antebellum in general with America, they are talking about the period from when the United States was created until the American Civil War. So if you're into buying old houses, and you find one that is an Antebellum Home, it was built before 1861. And now you know.
